IPCC investigate possible police misconduct in Wigan teen death
Radio operators being investigated over their actions in the run-up to her death.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) say it’s investigating the actions of three Greater Manchester Police radio operators prior to the death of Ellen Higginbottom.
Ellen, 18, was reported missing having not returned from college in June. Her body was lter found at Orrell Water Park in the early hours of the following morning. Mark Buckley, 51, was jailed for life for her murder on 14 September.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) investigation, which is ongoing, is looking at the response by GMP to the missing person report and their actions up until the discovery of Ellen.
Based on the evidence collected so far, the IPCC lead investigator has decided there is an indication of misconduct by three radio operators at GMP. They have been notified.
Interviews with key police witnesses will also take place over the coming weeks.
