Hundreds have gathered in Salford to pay their respects to an RAF veteran - who has died at the age of one hundred years old.

Oswald Dixon - also known as 'Ossie' - left Jamaica for Manchester to serve in the Second World War.

An appeal was launched for members of the public to attend the service - after it was discovered the vet had no known friends or family.

"He will be sadly missed by us all”

Broughton House, the home for former servicemen and women where Oswald had lived his remaining years, posted this on their Facebook in response to today's service.

“On behalf of all the residents and staff at Broughton House, I would like to thank both the military and veteran community, the people of GM and all those who travelled from afar and braved the elements to show their respect and support today for Oswald Dixon.

"He will be sadly missed by us all and may he rest in peace”.
