Stuart Gallear of Makinson Avenue, Wigan, was sentenced to life in prison and will serve a minimum of 17 years for murder at Manchester Crown Court, Crown Square.

The 51-year-old pleaded not guilty to murder but admitted manslaughter at a previous hearing. He was found guilty of murder.

The court heard how Gallear had discovered his wife Mandy had been having an affair with another man.

After visiting two pubs where he told several people of his wife's affair Gallear returned home and is believed to have spoken to his wife.

Gallear claimed the couple talked amicably about their forthcoming break-up after he came home from the pub where he had had five pints of lager.

He said that as she unloaded the dishwasher, his wife then told him: Anyway, it's sorted now. We are separating. I love him more than you,'' and his memory of what happened next wasblurred'' as he picked up a large kitchen knife and attacked her.

He immediately called emergency services and told the call handler what had happened before claiming he had "lost it".

When officers arrived they found him kneeling over Mandy, performing CPR on her.

She was taken to hospital where she sadly died shortly after.

Detective Inspector Lewis Hughes, from GMP's Major Incident Team, said: "We will never understand why Gallear decided to grab that knife and stab the mother of his children and the woman he was married to for some 20 years.

"He will now have to live with that guilt every day of his life and will face 17 years behind bars.

"This family have suffered what can only be described as unbearable heartbreak and I cannot begin to comprehend how painful the trial would have been for them.

"These are truly tragic circumstances and my thoughts remain with them and all those affected by this harrowing case."
