Golf clubs, knives & hammer used as Sunday league match turns violent in Stretford
Around 30 players and spectators brawl during match
A police investigation has been launched after a Sunday League football team were attacked by a rival team in Stretford.
Shortly before 12.50pm on Sunday police were called to Turn Moss Fields in Stretford to reports of a fight involving 20 people, some armed with knives and golf clubs.
Eyewitnesses reported that two teams began to fight on the pitch before 10 spectators joined in with the fighting, some armed with knives, golf clubs and one with a hammer.
Officers attended and one person was taken to hospital with facial injuries.
The attackers had made off before police arrived.
An investigation has been launched and police are now working with the Football Association.
Sergeant Rob Cope from GMP’s Trafford borough said: “We are appealing for witnesses after this horrible attack at a Sunday League football match.
“Violence is never welcome in football, but this was another level.
“The fact that spectators were armed makes us believe that this was a planned attack and not a case of emotions running a little too high.
“Luckily, the victims in this attack will recover from their injuries, however we could have been dealing with a much more tragic situation, especially when weapons are involved.
“We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the fighting or knows someone involved to get in touch with police.
“No one should lace up their boots for a game of football and be met with this sort of violence.
