GMP back new domestic abuse law

Coercion and control made into criminal offence.

Published 29th Dec 2015

Today sees coercion and control in a relationship made into a criminal offence, carrying a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

The new legislation mean that victims who are subjected to coercive and controlling behaviour can bring their perpetrators to justice, with incidents that stop short of serious physical violence but amount to extreme psychological and emotional abuse will now be recognised as a crime within the domestic abuse framework.

Greater Manchester Police’s Julie Church-Taylor told Key 103:

There’s so much help out there for all types of victims of domestic abuse including coercive control. This is a huge subject and this is about someone’s life being ruined.
