Fears of being a 'grass' could cost lives say North West Crimestoppers
The charity has launched a new campaign urging people not to fear passing on information about crime to the police

People across the northwest are being warned fears of being a 'grass' or 'grassing someone up' could be costing lives.
North West Crimestoppers say vital information about serious and violent crime is often withheld from investigators.
They have now launched a campaign across the North West and North Wales challenging the stereotypes that often put people off from speaking up about crime.
It is hoped it will increase the amount of 'community information' or 'tip-offs' from people given anonymously to the charity from those areas that are most affected by crime.
Gary Murray, North West Regional Manager at the charity Crimestoppers, said:
“Criminals often bring firearms into the North West, exploiting children and vulnerable adults, enabling loan sharks, involved in modern slavery and human trafficking and other serious and damaging crime. Living a 'flash’ life, whilst leaving behind a trail of misery, is very typical.
“Although we have seen record numbers of people across the North West and North Wales contacting Crimestoppers over the last year, we have also seen too many lives taken by shootings and stabbings, young people being targeted and exploited by drug gangs, lives lost on our roads because of drug driving, and many lives being destroyed by crime.
“We understand that for many it takes a lot of courage to go online or pick up the phone to perhaps report those who you went to school with, live in the same street, or whose children play with yours. However, by taking that step you, are making your community safer for your family.
“Crimestoppers is 100% anonymous. You will never be asked for any of your personal details. Call freephone 0800 555 111 at any time or complete a secure online form at Crimestoppers-uk.org. No one will ever know that you have contacted us. Passing on what you know to the charity Crimestoppers is not 'grassing' it is helping to save lives.”
