Failsworth Hit-and-Run

Published 28th Aug 2015

Police are appealing for witnesses after a fail-to-stop crash in Failsworth left a pedestrian with life-threatening head injuries.

At around 7pm on Thursday 27th August the 52-year-old victim exited an off-licence at the junction of Ashton Road East and Roman Road.

As he crossed Ashton Road East, a Ford Fiesta travelling south west along the same road went through the mini roundabout at the junction with Roman Road and collided with the victim.

The 52-year-old was thrown into the middle of the carriageway by the force of the collision, resulting in serious head injuries.

It is believed the Fiesta initially slowed down, before accelerating away along Ashton Road and away from the collision site, leaving the injured man in the road.

The victim was taken to Salford Royal Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition with life-threatening head injuries.

The Ford Fiesta was later found abandoned on Parkfield Lane, Middleton, and has been recovered for forensic examination.

An investigation to find the driver of the car has subsequently been launched.

Sergeant Mark Thomas, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This cowardly driver has left an innocent pedestrian in a perilous condition in hospital.

“To leave a man lying, seriously injured, in the middle of the road having knocked him down is a despicable act, they could have been leaving him to die.

“We need anyone who may have been on Ashton Road at the time of the collision to come forward and speak to police about what they may have seen.

“Any information may assist in finding whoever is responsible.”
