Elderly man fighting for his life in hospital after being hit by a tram

The 78-year-old was knocked down outside the Arndale Centre just before 7pm last night

Police are appealing for witnesses with video or dashcam footage to come forward after an elderly man was knocked down by a tram outside the Arndale Centre.

The 78-year-old is fighting for his life in hospital following the incident just before 7pm on Wednesday evening.

He sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

The driver of the tram was tested for drug and alcohol use and both came back negative.

No arrests have been made.

Officers now say they want to hear from anyone who saw what happened.

Police Constable Andrew Page of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We’re working to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision which has left a man with serious injuries.

“If you were in the area yesterday evening and you witnessed the collision then please get in touch with us, as your information could be vital in allowing us to piece together what happened.

“We’re particularly keen to hear from anyone with video or dashcam footage.”
