The family of a man who died following a collision in West Didsbury while out walking his dog have paid tribute to him. At around 1.30pm on Friday 30th October, 55-year-old Ian O’Mara was walking his dog Tia along Princess Road when he crossed near to the junction of Darley Avenue. As he did so, both he and his dog were struck by an oncoming coach. The man suffered serious head injuries and was immediately taken to Wythenshawe Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead. His dog died at the scene. The southbound carriageway of Princess Road was closed following the collision. Paying tribute, his family said: “Ian was a fantastic Husband to Glynis and Father to son's Ross, Neil and Glenn, he was also a doting Grandfather to Max. “He was a well-liked, respected and much loved member of the Withington community and surrounding areas. “Ian had lots of friends who saw him as a strong and popular individual a 'man's man'. “Although Ian was a private family person he also enjoyed to socialise in and around the local bars and bookies! “Memories of holidays and family time spent playing with 'his boys' will be treasured. “Ian was also a lifelong Manchester City fan and often played football in the park with his sons determined to get at least one of them signed up. “Ian spent time at Withington and The Christie Hospitals where he was well known and respected. “After taking early retirement Ian and Glynis got a two-year old Jack Russell called Tia from the Cheshire Dogs Home, she quickly wrapped Ian around her little paw. “Ian would often be seen in the area walking Tia whom he loved dearly and would often arrive home with a tale to tell about their walks. “We wish to thank friends and neighbours for the love and support offered and wish a special thanks to the witnesses and emergency services who tried to assist Ian following the collision.” Police are continuing to appeal for information and have released the picture of a dark blue/black two door Mercedes. Police Sergeant Paul Higgins said: “We do not believe this car was involved in the collision but the driver may have witnessed what happened. They had stopped at the pedestrian crossing on Princess Road at the junction with Darley Avenue. If you are the driver of the car, please contact us as soon as possible.”
