Salford’s very own Doctor Who, Christopher Ecclestone opened a new state of the art dementia hub at Salford University today aimed at offering care and support to sufferers.

The hub which features a dementia friendly garden and visitors centre cost £300,000 and will also serve as an outreach centre for the public to access the latest research and ideas about living well with dementia.

Dementia sufferers helped to design the hub ,which features a bright colour scheme as well as a fridge and cupboards with glass faces – something many dementia sufferers claim can help them navigate a kitchen more easily.

Christopher’s father suffered with dementia and the actor said it’s a subject close to his heart, especially as he saw how his mum cared for his dad through the disease.

The actor noted: “It is a growing problem and we need families and carers to be educated, supported and understood.”

A series of events including a panel discussion involving Christopher, former MP Hazel Blears and Professor Anthea Innes, Director of the Salford Institute for Dementia are taking place at the university as part of Dementia Awareness week.
