Crews battle another moorland blaze over Stalybridge

Four engines were called out and had the flames under control in just a few hours

Firefighters worked overnight to bring a fire on the moors over Stalybridge under control.

Officers fro Ashton and Stalybridge were first alerted to the blaze on Sunday evening.

Specialist moorland wildfire equipment was drafted in to tackle the flames.

At around 10:25 on Sunday evening, an update from Manchester Fire read:

"Firefighters are making every effort to bring the fire on the moors under control this evening using specialist moorland firefighting equipment.

"Specialist units and crews from Ashton, Stalybridge, Oldham, Hyde and Bolton North are battling the blaze.

"Residents are urged to not call 999 about this incident as we are aware of and dealing with it."

Concerned residents took to social media to express their concern about the flames.

In response, GMFRS told them to wait indoors for any information.

No-one needed to be evacuated and the blaze was brought under control nearly two hours after crews were first called.

At around 11:15pm last night GMFRS put out this statement:

"Thanks to the incredible hard work from our firefighters this fire is now out. We will shortly be scaling down our involvement at the scene.

Our firefighters, from Ashton, Stalybridge, Oldham, Hyde and Bolton North, used specialist moorland firefighting equipment to bring the blaze, which measured 100m squared, under control and extinguish it.

We were on the scene for approximately two hours. The cause will be looked into in due course."
