Richard Hawley who plays Johnny Connor in Coronation Street has been helping to raise awareness of dementia across Greater Manchester as part of a new campaign.

The Alzheimer’s Society roadshow bus will be traveling to different locations in Manchester, with its first stop at Manchester Royal Infirmary where the Corrie star will be.

Richard who also stars in Family Affairs, May Day, and the film, Love Actually lost his dad to dementia.

Richard's been showing his support for the Alzheimer's Society and will be joining the roadshow team to help raise awareness of dementia in the city.

Richard says: “I have seen the effects of dementia first hand through my father’s illness and it not only has a huge impact on the person diagnosed but also the rest of the family too.

“It’s important that families affected by dementia get the care and support they need.

"That’s why I’d urge anyone worried about themselves or a loved one to pop in to the Alzheimer’s Society roadshow on its tour of Greater Manchester and find out how Alzheimer’s Society can make a difference.”

Greater Manchester health and social care devolution team, Dementia United, was launched last November to recognise dementia as a priority for Great Manchester and to transform the care people living with dementia and their carers receive.

Vicky McCall, Services Manager for Alzheimer’s Society in Manchester said: “Our community roadshow tour across Greater Manchester goes hand in hand with Dementia United to support the estimated 29,739 people with dementia in Greater Manchester to live, full, active and meaningful lives.

‘When we stop at Manchester Royal Infirmary the team will provide essential support, information and advice about dementia.

"Signposting people with dementia and their carers to essential local services, and bringing people concerned about their memory, or that of a loved one, a step closer to achieving a diagnosis.

We are honoured to have Richard Hawley attending our event and be using our community roadshow tour to support the work of Dementia United.”
