Community Clean-up in Tameside

Council takes action following complaints.

Tameside Council's launching a community clean-up operation following a number of complaints about over-flowing bins and fly-tipping.

Resident Laura Martin, who lives in Ashton-under-Lyne, contacted the authority about rubbish piling up in alleyways and communal areas.

She tweeted us a number of time to show the true extent of the problem:

LISTEN: Laura's been telling our reporter Claire Hannah that something needs to be done:

In a statement sent to KEY103 Tameside Council says:

"Contaminated bins and the dumping of rubbish is a long-standing problem in this area. Tameside Council has carried out many clean-ups but no sooner is the rubbish removed than people start dumping again.

Unfortunately, a small number of residents do not care about the district and refuse to use recycling bins properly. The constant clear-ups are a waste of council resources and use money that could be much better spent on frontline services.

On Thursday (July 28) Tameside Council will be organising a community clean-up in the area. Environmental Services and Neighbourhood Services will be joining partners such as McDonald’s, Regenda, New Charter and Holy Trinity Community Centre to remove waste from alley-gated backs and communal areas. Council staff will also be speaking to residents, explaining the correct use of recycling bins."
