A clean-up operation's underway in parts of Greater Manchester and Cheshire after a freak storm caused flash floods, powercuts and commuter chaos.

The whole of the Metrolink went down last night and engineers worked throughout the night to restore the network before the morning rush hour.

Greater Manchester Fire service says a number of 999 calls were made to North West Fire Control after a storm hit Greater Manchester shortly before 6.30pm on Tuesday, September 13.

In a 90 minute period 106 calls were made by people reporting flooding and weather related issues.

Bramhall high street was one of the worst affected areas. Shop owners and workers pulled together to help staff at Costa which was flooded.

Manchester City Centre was also hit - at one point Market Street looked like a river - so shops there will be assessing the damage this morning.

The Asda at Ashton-under-Lyne is also closed after part of the roof collapsed - luckily no-one was injured.

City's Champions League clash was also called off last minute due to a water-logged pitch.

The game's been re-arranged for 7.45 tonight.

That's not gone down well with Borussia Monchengladbach who wanted it earlier and as a result half of the visiting fans have had to travel home.
