The dad of Charlie Pope, the University of Manchester student who drowned in a city centre canal, says he couldn't be more thankful for the support his family has received.

Charlie will be laid to rest today after he went missing coming home from a night out earlier this month.

His dad - Nick - started a campaign for better water safety around the canals, and says the reaction has been incredible.

Family and friends of Charlie Pope have started a campaign since his death, #makecharliethelast, to improve water safety.

Nick's told us he couldn't have imagined the campaign's success.

“It’s just incredible and to everybody who’s joined the petition I’d just like to say thank you so so much to everybody who has campaigned, most of them who I’ve never heard of.

“Thank you so much, you will make a difference and make Charlie the last.

“We’re nearly at 50,000 signatures now and it’s just incredible, it means so much.

“We’ve been taken aback by the reaction, but clearly there’s been a ground swell for many years in Manchester and other cities.
