The dad of a Manchester University student who died after drowning in a city centre canal, has vowed to take his fight for safer waterways to Parliament.

Nick Pope's son - Charlie - was reported missing on 1st March this year - a few days later his body was found by underwater divers.

Now, Nick wants to get safety barriers installed along waterways up and down the country to keep canals and rivers safer.

He has launched 'Make Charlie the Last' - a petition that has since received tens of thousands of signatures.

He told us:

"Everyday you see on that petition website, people are signing it. They were signing it last night and they're signing it this morning. The message is getting out there. It's a relatively simple thing that could save lives, which is something that we really need to do."

Nick wants parents of any child going away to University to make sure they are clued up on the dangers of water:

"It's funny, as you do these things, you assume a lot of things are in place and that these things have been done. You need to question everything to make sure you're satisfied that what is being done is enough."

Already temporary barriers are being put up in the City Centre, following Charlie's death, but now Nick wants Parliament to listen to him in his fight to get better safety measures up and down the country.
