Chaos Caused By Overturned Tanker On M56

Published 20th Oct 2015

The M56 is shut in both directions - and is expected to stay that way for several hours - after a tanker overturned on the Eastbound carriageway.

It’s shut between junctions 11 and 14, while emergency services are at the scene, between junctions 12 and 14.

We are still waiting for confirmation about what substance the tanker was carrying.

A 1,800m cordon has been set up as a precautionary measure though, and residents in the Helsby, Hapsford, Frodsham and Elton are advised to stay indoors with their windows and doors closed.

Any Motorists caught in the tailbacks are advised to turn off their air conditioning ventilation system and close their windows too.

In addition to the M56 the Liverpool to Runcorn train line is also closed, and traffic updates show no Arriva trains will run between Chester and Manchester Piccadilly.

Drivers are being advised to avoid the area if they can.

The driver of the tanker is believed to have suffered minor injuries.
