A stolen car has careered over a tram platform and on to the tracks after a police chase.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Three men were arrested in the wake of the dramatic smash at New Islington Metrolink stop in Manchester on Tuesday morning.

Just before 10.55am traffic police in Clayton spotted a stolen black Skoda Fabia and a short chase began, before the car mounted the platform and crashed on to the tracks.

Sergeant Graeme Murrie from Greater Manchester Police said: Thankfully, there were no members of the public at the Metrolink stop when the driver of this car, quite unbelievably, decided to mount the platform and then crashed on to the tracks below it, otherwise the consequences could have been far worse.

Three people have been arrested in connection with this incident and will be questioned by police later today.''

Debris including a tyre was left scattered across the platform in the wake of the smash, with the car wedged diagonally over the edge.

Mr Murrie continued: The car has now been moved from the tracks and I would like to thank some workers from one of the building sites nearby who helped to remove this car quickly, meaning that disruption to passengers on the Metrolink service should hopefully have been kept to a minimum.''

Two men in their 30s were arrested on suspicion of stealing a car, and have been taken to hospital as a precaution. Another man, 27, was arrested shortly afterwards also on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.

No one was injured in the crash.
