Canal Barriers Planned
City centre towpaths to be gated off following a number of deaths.
Manchester’s City Centre canals are set to be made safer after the council revealed plans to gate off the towpath overnight.
There have been several canal-related deaths in the city centre over the past few years and the measures introduced are aimed at reducing further risks.
The new plans were revealed as council bosses working with Greater Manchester Police and the Canals and Rivers Trust decided to take action.
A planning application has now been submitted to install the gates which will block off a the stretch between Rochdale Canal and Dale Street.
