Angry reaction as Remembrance Day silence disrupted by fireworks in Salford
Police were called to a disused pub in Eccles this morning
Veterans reacted angrily after the 11 o’clock silence on Remembrance Sunday was disrupted by fireworks being let off in Salford.
As the Last Post played and hundreds of people stood in silence at the cenotaph in Eccles, a series of fireworks exploded into the sky.
They were allegedly ignited by a man sitting on a ledge of a first floor window at a disused pub across the road.
A crowd of angry veterans gathered outside the pub shouting “Get him out!'' and trying to break the door down, with others attempting to climb up to the window.
A lone police officer stood blocking the door and calling for back-up as he tried to hold the crowd back.
Some traffic cones were also thrown. A second man then appeared at the window, appearing to spit at the crowd who shouted for him to come outside.
Greater Manchester Police have confirmed they’ve arrested a 38-year-old man on suspicion of a public order offence. They say they were called at 11.05am to reports of a firework being thrown through the window of a pub.
The force added there were no reports of any injuries.
