Merseyside voted entirely to back Labour in the general election, with all other parties being wiped out of the area.

Labour won a comfortable majority nationally, and in the Merseyside area, areas that had previously voted Conservative opted to cast their vote for the Labour party.

Among these, Southport made history after it voted to elect a Labour MP for the first time in its 139-year history as a constituency.

As well as this, Labour hopefuls made large gains on their second-placed counterparts, with strong majorities being seen, such as in Knowsley, where the gap between first and second was 19,000 votes.

However, close by to Merseyside, Conservative MP Esther McVey has narrowly managed to hold onto her seat following the election.

Esther managed to hold onto her seat in Tatton during the course of the election.

McVey, who was appointed the Minister of State Without Portfolio, was defending her Tatton seat that she had won during the election in 2015.

Following a review of boundaries, Tatton's boundaries had been partially redrawn to include parts of Chester and Wilmslow.

At the close of counting, McVey was declared to have been elected in the region, with a 1,100 vote majority.
