Trade Union USDAW says they're having to support more shop workers across the Humberside police force area due to an increase in shoplifting.

It's as recent figures show there has been more than 20,000 offences that have been recorded by Humberside Police since 2019.

Kyla Parsons is from the union.

She told us: "It's quite traumatic some days for our members."

There are instances where the police can't physically get to the shop quickly enough

"Not only is it causing problems at work for some people but it's also the anxiety and the fear that comes off the back of that for our members."

"There are instances where the police can't physically get to the shop quickly enough - there just aren't enough police."

"The other point is that it's a £200 threshold - so anything under the 2 hundred pound mark isn't prosecuted."

"We're always campaigning to get a stand alone offence to protect shop workers."

"We campaign against the violence that shop workers face on a daily basis."

"Now we have a Labour Government we are very optimistic it will get passed and become a stand alone law."

"People aren't just stealing to sell things - they're shoplifting because they need to be able to live."

"They need it for food - nowadays you have people shoplifting baby milk."

"People shouldn't have to worry about feeding their children."
