We're hearing that some people across Lincolnshire and Newark are struggling to afford things like shampoo and toilet roll.

Research shows 70 percent of people in the East Midlands are having to choose between paying for food and bills or toiletries and cleaning products.

It comes as a new report shows in 2023 there were over 1 million MORE people UK wide living in so called hygiene poverty compared to 2 years ago.

We've been speaking to Reverend Steve Holt who runs a hygiene bank from the Holy Cross Church in Lincoln.

He told us: "It started in Lincoln at the end of 2022 with one centre and now there are 5 centres."

They're really struggling to maintain what they regard as a decent way of living

"I think, on the whole, people are desperate and they're in need."

"They're people that really care about their hygiene, about the way they look, about their appearance."

"But they're really struggling to maintain what they regard as a decent way of living."

"There are things we've all done we've cut down on because of the cost of living."

"It might be on our social life for some people, or the amount of petrol we put in our cars."

"For some people that's been cutting back on what we regard as basic essentials."

They've been a couple of occasions where people have been reduced to tears

"That's where the need comes from."

"We give out a lot of everything to be honest."

"Sanitary products, toothpaste, deodorants, soaps, shower gel, shampoo."

"Those sorts of things as well as nappies, even basic things like tissues sometimes."

"They've been a couple of occasions where people have been reduced to tears."

"Either when they've come in, they've broken down straight away because they've realised what they've come for."

"Or when you've handed somebody a bag of basic things, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo or shower gel - things like that."
