Search for missing man stood down

Police have suspended the search for 80-year-old Brian Fletcher, more than three weeks after he went missing while walking in the Tockholes area of Lancashire.

Mr. Fletcher, a keen walker and birdwatcher from Bury, was last seen on Saturday, March 22, after traveling to one of his regular walking spots. His car was later found parked in a layby off the A675, near Tockholes Road.

Since his disappearance, an extensive multi-agency search operation has been underway, covering around 36 square kilometers of challenging moorland, woodland, watercourses, and reservoir terrain.

Specialist teams including local police, search dogs, drones, and air support units from Lancashire Police were involved, alongside mountain rescue teams from Bolton, Bowland and Pennine, Rossendale, Holme Valley, Calder Valley, and Oldham. Greater Manchester Police and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service also contributed, as did the Coastguard helicopter.

"We are very grateful for the support and expertise provided in such difficult terrain and conditions," a Lancashire Police spokesperson said. "The public has also played a crucial role, with many offering help or searching while out walking in the area."

Despite the scale of the operation and thorough review of CCTV and dashcam footage from the area, no further leads have been uncovered.

Authorities have now paused the active search, though they remain open to revisiting the area if new information comes to light or environmental conditions change.

Mr. Fletcher's family have been informed and expressed gratitude for the widespread efforts made by emergency services and volunteers.

At the time of his disappearance, Brian was believed to be wearing a tan-coloured cap, a blue jumper, and cargo trousers.

Police are continuing to appeal for information from anyone who was in the Tockholes area on March 22 or who may have seen someone matching his description.
