D Day commemorations across Southport have taken an artistic twist this year, with war themed crocheted post box toppers located around the town.

A group of around 25 people known as the "Southport Hookers" are behind seven unique woolen designs, made to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings.

Member Suzanne Goatcher says they're helping to inspire the next generation: "It's very important that D-Day is remembered for all, and what we've noticed is that children are asking questions when they see the toppers, especially after the ones we did for Remembrance Day last year. It's just another way of getting the message across.

"We try to mark most occasions throughout the year and this one was very important to us. We have one or two former serving military members in our group and we also found out that one of the veterans of the D Day Landings was a Southport man who lived here for all of his life.

"His name was Harry Howorth and we've done a tribute to him on Lord Street."

Suzanne says the group's membership is growing by the month: "We started off with just a few of us in September last year and the first toppers that we did were for Halloween. We had three toppers out and we had such an overwhelming response, we couldn't believe it. Everyone said it made them smile, and feel happy and proud to have them around Southport. Each time we put toppers out, we get more members.

The group's also been asked to take part in the Longest Yarn D Day anniversary project, which will see the toppers from Southport put on show in Llandudno for an exhibition in October.
