Worcestershire man backs calls for more speech and language therapy funding
It's as parliament are set to debate the subject today (27 January)
A debate is set to take place in parliament today, following a petition from a West Midlands charity calling on government to increase investment in speech and language therapy.
It's after a petition started by the Mikey's Wish Foundation secured over 13,000 signatures.
The charity was set up Mikey Akers after his experiences with verbal dyspraxia and he's set to be in Parliament to watch the issue being debated.
Dave Harford from Worcestershire says it's good the topic is being discussed, as speech therapy really made an impact to his family and child.
"It needs to be in the spotlight an awful lot more," he said.
"Parents of children who have had speech therapy say it changes lives and it's changed our lives, our son's now got a voice.
"It's not just communicating, it's about swallowing, it's about talking, it's about breathing, all those things come under speech therapy.
I think what there needs to be is a universal raising of awareness around the UK, the facility to access speech therapy needs to be easier."
The government say it is committed to cutting waiting lists and growing the workforce to help people and their families get the support they need.
