Overturning of verdict into Worcester woman's toxic pill death would be a 'relief' says family
Bethany Shipsey died in February 2017 after taking tablets containing the substance DNP
A Worcester dad whose daughter died after taking toxic diet pills says he's "relieved" High Court judges don't believe she intended to take her own life.
21-year-old Bethany Shipsey died in February 2017 after taking tablets containing DNP or 2,4-Dinitrophenol.
Parents Doug and Carole have been campaigning since then to have the ruling changed and also fought to get the chemical compound DNP reclassified as a poison in 2023.
The conclusion of a coroner inquest which was a narrative verdict ruled in 2018 that Beth intended to take her own life but High Court judges have now disagreed, with an official judgement set to be handed down.
"The relief is the main thing," Doug said.
"There's been so much stress and anxiety that this has caused, trying to fight for justice for Beth to ensure that her last intentions in life were reflected properly and the truth about how she died is recorded truthfully.
"This will be set a precedent in coronial case law which will benefit other families to hopefully prevent them from having to endure the years of heartache and all the financial burden and everything else that goes with this.
"Hopefully her legacy will help other families to avoid some of what we went through."
An official judgement is set to be made at a later date.
