Herefordshire farmer among those calling on UK supermarkets for more support and to stop 'farmwashing'
They want supermarkets to be more honest with consumers about where their produce comes from
Farmers across the UK are calling on supermarkets to put an end to so called 'farmwashing', and support homegrown producers.
An open letter signed by more than 100 figures from the farming and food industry want supermarkets to be more honest with consumers about where their produce comes from with their labelling.
Research also carried out by the Riverford Organic Farmers, suggested 61% of farmers in the UK are concerned they will have to give up their farms within the next 18 months.
Ben Andrews runs a farm in Herefordshire, and is backing the calls for more to be done to help boost the confidence in farmers for the future.
"I've always being super proud to be able to grow food that's sold in this country," he said.
"We've seen in the past, whether it's through Brexit or during Covid, how supermarket shelves run empty pretty quickly, so I think it's really important that we source as much food as as we absolutely can from this country.
"It's the supermarkets that we really need the support from, we have to work with them and hope that they will take this on board and work a bit closer with us."
The director of food and sustainability at the British Retail Consortium said, 'supermarkets are always keen to promote British farming', and 'follow the strict legislation on the labelling of food.'
