Members of the National Farmers Union (NFU) in Herefordshire and Worcestershire say they want to see support from the next government to protect and support the country's food chain.

The NFU also say they want to see a smooth move to new environmental schemes which can provide long-term sustainability to the industry and farmers.

Ali Parker is the county advisor for the group in Herefordshire, and says helping the farming sector can help with keeping home grown products on the shelves.

"We need to deliver to ensure that we have a strong domestic food supply and also so we can continue to deliver everything that the farmers are delivering now in the future," she said.

"Everyone will remember the issues we had around food shortages a year or so ago when countries outside of the UK were suffering really extreme weather events, and that was causing huge problems here in the UK.

"That shows why we need our domestic food supply chain, and need to support the farmers here, as we produce food to some of the highest environmental and animal welfare standards in the world.

"It's really important that our general public have access to affordable, nutritious, high quality food, so that is why it's a sector that must be supported."
