Breakfast 'important' to make sure children are ready to learn says Herefordshire headteacher

The first schools to offer free breakfast clubs for pupils were named ahead of a trial of the government's programme

The head of a Herefordshire primary school says the free breakfast clubs government scheme will really help students.

It was announced last month the first schools to offer free breakfast clubs for pupils had been named ahead of a trial of the government's programme.

75\0 state schools with primary-aged children from every region of England have been were selected to join the pilot which will offer a free breakfast to all pupils and at least 30 minutes of childcare before school.

Little Dewchurch Primary school are one of the schools set to be involved with the trial, head of school Nicola Hudson says it will really help make sure children are fuelled ready to learn.

"There's lots of evidence to show that children who do start their day with breakfast are able to concentrate better and this allows us to get more engagement in lessons," she said.

"It's not something that we've offered before so there's lots of excitement within our community and we're hopeful that there'll be a real uptake and families will really help us to to roll it out and be fully engaged in it.

"We are going to open after the Easter holidays so children will be able to come in on that first day back and have breakfast."

The trial is expected to run from April before a national rollout later on.
