Psy's Gangnam Style isn't the most played YouTube video any more
It was at the top spot for five years
Last updated 11th Jul 2017
It was truly a one-hit wonder, but Psy's Gangnam Style reigned at the top of the YouTube chart for music videos for five years until yesterday.
Uploaded in 2012 just two years later the video surpassed YouTube's own maximum number of views (2,147,483,647) and forced them to re-write the code. Now videos can be viewed a massive 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 times! Even this video will struggle to reach that number of views.
Now after five years the catchy Gangnam Style makes way for Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth's 'See You Again'. The song that appeared on the Furious 7 soundtrack was commissioned as a tribute to the late actor Paul Walker.
With 2,896,489,089 views and counting if one person was to listen to this pop/rap ballad as many times as the video has been viewed they would have to start listening over 21,000 years ago! A long time before the idea of YouTube was even thought up.
'See You Again' was co-written by and featured the voice of Charle Puth, whose most recent song 'Attention' reached number 9 in the UK charts. Tweeting yesterday Charlie said, 'For the record, I joined @YouTube in 2007 hoping to make a video that would reach 10,000 views. Just heard about See You Again...wow.'
In addition to Wiz Khalifa and Psy, Taylor Swift appears twice in the top ten most views music videos with 'Shake It Off' and 'Blank Space' and amazingly just a few months after release 'Despacito' has found itself at number 5!
Here's the full rundown in reverse order:
10) Taylor Swift - 'Blank Space'
9) Katy Perry - 'Roar'
8) Maroon 5 - 'Sugar'
7) Enrique Iglesias - 'Bailando '
6) Taylor Swift - 'Shake It Off'
5) Luis Fonsi featuring Daddy Yankee - 'Despacito'
4) Mark Ronson - 'Uptown Funk'
