Katy Perry has been announced as the host of this year’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).

MTV made the announcement on their social channels, sharing a video of Katy dressed up as a ‘moonwoman’.

Katy’s notched up an impressive four nominations for this year’s award ceremony. This year for the first time ever the MTV VMAs are removing the Best Female and Best Male categories. Meaning Bruno Mars, Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd and Lorde will fight it out for the ‘Best Artist’ title.

This is the first time the VMAs have removed their gender specific categories, however MTV have done it before with the MTV Movie and TV awards earlier this year. The removal of the gender specific categories meant Emma Watson and Millie Bobby Brown took away the winning actor awards.

Dominating this year’s MTV VMA nominations is Kendrick Lamar with a massive eight nominations including Video of the Year, Best Hip Hop, and Best Cinematography, all for his single 'HUMBLE'.

Katy follows on from Kendrick with her five nominations, as does The Weeknd with five nominations including Artist of the Year.
