HBO executives have revealed that the network wants hit TV series Game Of Thrones to run for at least a decade.

It has been previously suggested by Game Of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss that the show would wrap up at the end of series seven.

However HBO programming president Michael Lombardo has confirmed HBO’s intention to see out ten seasons.

He told Entertainment Weekly: “This is the hard part of what we do. We started this journey with David and Dan. It’s their vision.

“Would I love the show to go 10 years as both a fan and network executive? Absolutely.”

Lombardo added that the final decision on how long Game Of Thrones will continue, is down its showrunners Benioff and Weiss.

He continued: “We’ll have an honest conversation that explores all possible avenues. If they weren’t comfortable going beyond seven seasons, I trust them implicitly and trust that’s the right decision as horrifying as that is to me.

“What I’m not going to do, is have a show continue past where the creators believe they’ve finished with the story.”

Season five of Game Of Thrones will begin on Sky Atlantic on 13th April, one day after premiering on HBO in the US and will consist of 10 episodes.

The upcoming season will mark the first time that Game Of Thrones author George RR Martin has not written an episode. He is currently putting his efforts into completing the sixth novel in his series of books, ‘The Winds Of Winter’.
