Disney has confirmed that a Frozen sequel is on the way.

The company tweeted excited fans via Twitter on Thursday, with the message: “Forecast: Winter weather ahead! @DisneyAnimation developing #Frozen2."

It was joined by a picture of sisters Elsa and Anna, alongside Sven the reindeer and Kristoff.

So far there has been no announcement regarding a release date.

However Disney has confirmed that Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, both directors of the first film, will be returning for the new project.

Jennifer Lee tweeted: "At last, I can say - FROZEN 2!!!! I'm beyond excited to create alongside my Frozen family!"

Since the release of ‘Frozen’, the film has generated £857m worldwide and won two Oscars in 2014 for Best Original Song and Best Animated Feature.

It also went on to become the highest-grossing animation of all time.

For fans of ‘Frozen’, a seven-minute follow-up called ‘Frozen Fever’ will hit cinemas later this month and will be shown at screenings of Disney’s ‘Cinderella’.
