'We've alienated ourselves from the world': Sir Anthony Hopkins on why he doesn't watch TV anymore
The Welsh actor is starring in the new series Westworld
Sir Anthony Hopkins has admitted that he avoids watching TV at all costs, as it 'poisons our brains'.
The veteran Welsh actor, who's starring in the new Sky Atlantic series Westworld, says he especially avoids TV news.
Speaking with a roundtable of press ahead of the show's release, Sir Anthony clarfied why he's put off by our television culture.
'We watch the television all the time. We get all of our information from it! So i've stopped watching it.'
'I don't want to know, not because I want to be an ignoramous, but because I know I have no control.'
The Silence of the Lambs actor has linked our obsession with television to fearmongering.
'It's like obesity. It's like being told that if you eat all this junk food you're going to get fat and die.'
'If you turn on the television it's going to poison your brain, your psychology, your outlook on life.
'You can become a cynic and miserable in life'.
Ironically, the Thor actor is currently starring in the HBO series Westworld, a remake of the classic 1973 science fiction thriller by the same name.
Sir Anthony plays Robert Ford, the creative director of the futuristic themepark where the show is set. The series also stars Thandie Newton, James Marsden and Evan Rachel Wood.
Despite his protests about TV, Sir Anthony says he was interested in doing something new in his career.
'I haven't done TV in years. It's a very interesting part to play, and oddly enough, for a man who's not about control or certainty, they give me these very controlling parts to play.'
'I guess I know how to look like a control freak.'
*Westworld is on at 9pm on Tuesdays on Sky Atlantic.*
