A Scunthorpe man who hurled tiles and bricks at Police and was found in possession of a firearm during a five hour roofttop standoff has been jailed.

Kyle Ferguson, 30-years-old, of Lambourne Rise in Scunthorpe pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and possession of a prohibited weapon.

On the evening of Thursday 30 May around 7pm officers received reports that a wanted man was at an address on Coventry Close in Scunthorpe.

In an attempt to evade them, Ferguson tried flee the address on foot and subsequently climbed up onto a nearby roof, refusing to come down.

A police cordon was put in place after Ferguson began shouting abuse towards officers and making threats to harm them by throwing bricks and rocks down towards officers, narrowly missing injuring them.

Officers placed a ladder against one of the buildings in an attempt to get to Ferguson, but he continued to forcefully push it away.

Negotiators were deployed and while trying to talk Ferguson down a heavy object was heard sliding down the tiles of the roof - which was later confirmed to be a firearm.

Ferguson has been jailed for nine years and ten months following his appearance at Grimsby Crown Court on Monday 23 December.

Humberside Police said:

"After several hours, and the time of 27 police officers, Ferguson eventually agreed to come down off the roof. However, his hostile behaviour did not subside, and Ferguson continued to make threats to bite and eat the officers, before eventually being arrested on suspicion of affray, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, intentionally or recklessly causing a public nuisance, burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, common assault on an emergency worker and breach of bail."

Leading the investigation was Detective Constable Scott Belton from Scunthorpe’s Criminal Investigation Department.

He said: “Ferguson’s intentions that day were to cause as much disruption as possible, and he is a selfish man who had no regard for the local community, the damaged caused to the property, and wider members of the public who would have been affected in some way by his careless actions.

“Thankfully, no police officers were injured because of Ferguson’s mindless behaviour, but five-hours of police time was taken away from other members of the public who could have been in serious harm or needing emergency assistance whilst Ferguson was causing mayhem for no other reason than to evade arrest for as long as he could.

“To then discover that Ferguson was also in possession of a loaded firearm, I am pleased to have removed one from our streets before it was used to fatally or seriously injure someone.

“Crimes of this nature will not be tolerated, and we are absolutely determined to tackle gun crime with dedicated teams to support and take swift action against those responsible for serious offences.

“We will always do everything we can to protect our communities and hold people like Ferguson accountable for their actions.”
