A thirteen-year-old girl from East Yorkshire is urging cyclist to wear a helmet after her brother was killed after he was involved in a collision.
15 year old Ryley was on his bike when he was struck by a car in 2021 - he died after his head hit the kerb.
As part of Road Safety Week, Amelia has written a letter to raise awareness of the impact road deaths have on families.
Amelia said:
"My family's life, and a lot of people who knew Ryley and Ryley's friends will never be the same again. The reasons I'm writing this is to raise awareness on road safety.
2I just wish my big brother had a helmet on that night.
"It literally broke my heart into pieces, and I miss him so much. I'm trying to put awareness out for road safety so that you could wear helmets, because if you are a helmet, then maybe it could have saved his life.
"If you had an accident and it was involving your head and you had a helmet and it could possibly save your life, whereas if you didn't have one, you could possibly pass and get seriously injured."
Roads Policing Inspector Neil Hutchins said:
“Each year, we see a number of fatalities and serious injuries occur as a result of road traffic collisions across our force area.
“Whilst the circumstances may vary, each time an accident occurs they leave behind a trail of upset and devastation shattering lives and families.
“We would always encourage road users to wear a helmet and our efforts continue as we remain dedicated to keeping our roads safe alongside partnering agencies to prevent collisions and protect members of our communities.”
