East Yorkshire churches offer free services to those affected by funeral parlour scandal

Churches across East Yorkshire are helping bereaved families of those whose bodies have been recovered as part of an investigation into Legacy funeral directors.

Many are now waiting to lay their loved one to rest for the final time.

Canon Dominic Black is the Vicar at Hull Minster, said:

“If people want a Christian funeral, we are offering that at no cost not just here at the Minster but other churches across the city to ease that burden for people who have already paid out.

“There have already been two families that have a approached us for a funeral here. It’s a time for them now to lay that person to rest. There may be others, its early days. The process is beginning now as the police release the bodies for cremation.”

Humberside Police launched an investigation into Legacy Funeral Directors after they received a report of concern for the storage and management processes relating to care of the deceased in the premises.

A man and a woman remain on police bail in connection to the investigation.

A spokesperson from Hull City Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:

“Hull and East Riding council staff are supporting families whose loved ones have been identified so they can be laid to rest with dignity and respect. The arrangements are being agreed with families on an individual basis, reflecting their specific wishes, and no fees or charges are being raised. Families have asked for privacy at this very difficult time.”
