A scheme allowing young people to take the bus for £1, or £2 return, is set to launch across the East Riding next week.

From Monday, 16 to 19 year olds will be able to travel for the discounted fare throughout the rest of the Summer as part of an initiative funded by the Department for Transport.

The half-price fares run until 1 September, but East Rising of Yorkshire Council says the scheme may be extended until Christmas if this proves feasible.

The council has been awarded Government funding of £2.4m over two years from the Department for Transport through its Bus Service Improvement Plan Plus (BSIP+) programme.

Councillor Paul West, cabinet member for environment and transport at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “We really hope young passengers will take up this bus discount and hop on board for half price this summer.

“Thank you to local bus companies for joining in the scheme because many teenagers rely on them to get to where they want to go.”

Currently, under the national Bus Fare Cap, all passengers can travel on buses for £2 for a single journey until 31 December.

To qualify for the 16 to 19 reduced fares, a bus journey must be wholly within the East Riding or start/finish in the East Riding.

The Council says people may be asked for proof of age when they ask to buy a discounted ticket.
