Lewis Capaldi has surprised fans in Nottingham ahead of his gig tonight at the Motorpoint Arena.

The Scottish singer songwriter appeared to perform on the roof of a supermarket in Wilford.

Shoppers doing their weekly shop were left stunned when he popped up on the roof of their local Aldi – rebranding the store “Cap-Aldi” with a giant cardboard ‘Cap’ taped to the sign before breaking into an impromptu gig.

Something in the Heavens, Someone You Loved and Survive were performed in front of the unsuspecting customers.

Tonight the global star returns to Nottingham, playing at the Motorpoint Arena as part of his UK tour.

One shopper said, “I couldn’t tell if it was coming out of my headphones, then I looked up and it was the real Lewis Capaldi on the roof. My jaw was on the floor!”

Another said, “I popped in for some milk and ended up getting a full-on concert – only in this supermarket!”

The surprise show comes during his triumphant return to the stage after a two-year break.

Already blazing through a monumental 200,000-ticket sold-out UK arena tour - hailed by fans and critics alike as nothing short of spectacular - Capaldi is once again proving his power to connect, with rapturous crowds already singing back every word of his latest anthems.

And he’s not stopping there, with worldwide gigs later this year, and his biggest-ever UK and Irish headline shows confirmed for summer 2026. Kicking off at Dublin’s Marlay Park on June 24th, Capaldi will play eight huge outdoor shows including a headline performance at London’s 65,000-capacity BST Hyde Park on Saturday, July 11th.

Lewis himself said, “This is Capaldi on the roof of an Aldi. Sorry to get in the way of anyone’s shopping. I was back there earlier, some excellent produce, brioche buns, carrots - the lot.”

Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, said: “It doesn’t get more heavenly than Lewis Capaldi on the roof of an Aldi – it feels like this moment was written in the stars. Our customers were treated to something truly unforgettable, and Lewis turned an ordinary day into supermarket history.”

It was in June 2023, Capaldi announced that he was taking an extended and indefinite break from touring, citing a need to focus on his mental and physical health.

Earlier that month, Capaldi's set at the 2023 Glastonbury Festival was complicated by an apparent episode of his recently diagnosed Tourette's syndrome.

But this year, in June, he returned to Glastonbury with a surprise set. It was his first public performance since announcing his extended break.

On the same day, he released his latest single "Survive" which peaked at Number 1 in the UK charts following his performance, that's his sixth number-one in the UK.

This new single, saw him re-united with close collaborator Romans, who co-wrote his global megahit ‘Someone You Loved’, that extraordinarily turned 10x Platinum earlier this year.

Lewis' return to the stage this year has taken him to Glasgow's OVO Hydro, the Utilita Arena's in Sheffield, Birmingham and later he'll be performing in Cardiff, and P&J Live in Aberdeen.
