Free things to do with the kids in the East Midlands

Having a great day out with the family in the East Midlands doesn't have to be expensive. Here are some great places to bring the kids for lots of fun and laughter and to create memorable moments. From parks to museums, you name it – we got you!

Highfields Park, Nottinghamshire

During the summer, Highfields Park is filled with so much joy with so many kids running around. The playground has so many different elements that never fails to amaze the kids, and the beautiful view of the large lake is always a perfect place to watch the sunset. There are large open areas for a sweet picnic and a game of rounders or football. The car park is mostly free with easily accessible public transport via the tram or buses.

The Green's Mill and Science Centre, Nottinghamshire

To get your kids learning some science and exploring science practically, this is a great place to visit. You can visit his windmill and, when the wind allows, see it working. There’s also a Science Centre attached to the area with a great place to learn about a 19th-century physicist, one of the most remarkable scientists of his day. So get the learning goggles on, and experience science in your own city for free

Derby Silk Mill – UNESCO World Heritage Site, Derbyshire

If you are looking for a great history lesson then this is a fantastic place to bring the kids to, the Silk Millbuilding stands on the site of the world’s first factory and is the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Site. They host some creative events for children as well as adults and allows the kids to showcase their photography and stunning art. After its redevelopment, the new museum will display fascinating items from Derby’s rich industrial history and will be designed to empower makers of the future.

The Bradgate Park Trust, Leicestershire

Bradgate is a beautiful place to visit for a family day out, over 800 acres of land and fun! The park has a wild and rugged aspect you wouldn’t expect to see so close to a city. The River Lin runs through the lower park and is a favourite spot to sit and picnic. And if your kids would love to visit some friendly animals, then they can sit and watch the deers and make friends with them
