Dorset Police has been embracing innovative technology as part of its ongoing commitment to tackling violence against women and girls (VAWG) and protecting domestic abuse victims.

The Home Office-approved TecSAFE mobile safeguarding technology, provided by the Police Digital Service (PDS), is one of the tools being implemented to offer discreet and direct access to emergency support.

Case highlights TecSAFE’s life-saving potential

In a recent Dorset case, the value of TecSAFE technology was demonstrated when a domestic abuse victim's personal safety relied on the device.

The victim had been targeted by a perpetrator with a documented history of domestic abuse, who violated strict post-release conditions by going straight to their residence and initiating a violent knife attack.

During the assault, the victim’s personal phone was destroyed. However, they were able to activate their TecSAFE device, using it covertly to call for police assistance.

TecSAFE offers discreet and direct access to police control rooms, even enabling emergency response in the event of a silent activation.

Officers were immediately dispatched, and while the suspect fled the scene, the recorded emergency call proved critical in tracking down and arresting the perpetrator.

Reflecting on their experience, the victim described the device as ‘life-saving’ and praised its simplicity and effectiveness.

Police highlight technology’s impact

Detective Superintendent Neil Wright, Dorset Police’s operational lead for Violence Against Women and Girls and Domestic Abuse, emphasised the force’s commitment to using technology to enhance safety and support for victims.

“We remain fully committed to tackling violence against women and girls in Dorset and supporting victims to send a message that we are here for their safety,” Wright said.

“Domestic abuse is a key focus for us, and we will look at every way possible to support victims, embrace technology, and give them additional tools to assist with safeguarding.

“This case is a clear example of the benefits of technology such as TecSAFE and the real difference it is making to domestic abuse victims and other victims of crime.”

The force continues to explore new ways to integrate technology and enhance its resources to ensure the safety and protection of victims across Dorset.
