Dorset Police urges public to report drink and drug drivers this Christmas
Month-long campaign aims to intensify efforts to protect roads and catch offenders
Dorset Police is encouraging communities to work together and report motorists who may be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, during its Christmas drink and drug driving campaign.
The campaign, which runs from Monday 1st December 2025 to Thursday 1st January 2026, will see officers from the Roads Policing Team increasing their efforts to catch drivers posing risks to others on the roads.
Fatal five causes of collisions
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is one of the ‘fatal five,’ a list of factors commonly linked to serious injury and fatal road traffic collisions.
Inspector Joe Wheable, of the Roads Policing Team, stressed the importance of community involvement in helping police tackle this behaviour.
"Despite our continued efforts, we know that some people will still try to drive while under the influence this festive period," Wheable said.
"We want to appeal to the majority to help us and do the right thing by discouraging this behaviour and reporting anyone who is driving while under the influence to the police.
"This type of behaviour can sadly result in a road traffic collision, which is not only damaging for those involved, but also their loved ones and the wider community.
"We will be intensifying our efforts throughout December and will be out and about, day and night, to catch anyone who is posing a risk to road users.
"We want everyone to have the confidence to come forward and report a possible drink or drug driver to us – we can’t take action if we don’t know about it and your report could help save a life."
Public encouraged to plan responsibly
Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner, David Sidwick, echoed the appeal, urging people across the county to make responsible decisions during winter celebrations.
"Every decision to get behind the wheel while impaired endangers the lives of all road users," Sidwick said.
"The consequences are not just fines or arrests; they include profound and lasting harm to individuals, families, and communities, with incidents that are entirely preventable.
"As Dorset Police works tirelessly to keep our communities safe by catching those driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, I urge the people of Dorset to plan responsibly and ensure everyone gets home safely. Quite simply — it is not worth the risk."
Festive Feedback campaign
As part of this year’s Festive Feedback campaign, Dorset Police will provide updates to individuals who report drink and drug drivers. Reports can help officers target resources and catch offenders who pose significant risks.
Each call made is assessed and contributes intelligence that informs enforcement activity year-round.
How to report a drink or drug driver
If you suspect someone has been drinking or has taken drugs and is about to drive, Dorset Police advise residents to report concerns immediately by calling 999.
Details such as the make and model of the vehicle, registration number, and direction of travel can assist officers in locating and stopping offenders swiftly.
