Police in Dorset have launched an appeal for information following a serious crash in Beaminster.

Officers were first alerted to the incident, which involved a single car, just before 1am on Sunday morning (August 25th).

The incident had taken place on the A3066 midway between Beaminster and the nearby village of Melpash.

It is believed that a red Kia Rio had come off the road and hit a tree, causing extensive damage to the car.

A 31-year-old woman from the Bridport area was confirmed to have been arrested by Dorset Police on suspicion of a driving offence.

She was taken to hospital to be treated for her injuries, with authorities saying she remains in a "very serious condition".

An investigation has been launched into the incident, and the road has been closed in order for forensic enquiries to be carried out.

Speaking on the incident, Police Sergeant Mike Gatfield from Dorset Police's Traffic Unit urged anyone who may have been in the area to make themselves known as soon as possible.

"I am appealing to anyone who was travelling in the area at the time and witnessed what happened to please contact police," Gatfield said.

"If you have a dashcam fitted to your vehicle, I would ask you to please check for any relevant footage that may assist our enquiries.

"I appreciate the road closure has an impact on the public and I would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while it remains in place."

Anyone who may have any information that could lead police officers to piece together the events before the incident is being particularly asked to get in touch.

Those who may have been in the area at the time of the crash, or have relevant dashcam or doorbell footage is being asked to call 101 and quote incident reference number 55240131077.
