Rockfall causes road closure in Thirlmere

Motorists are being advised to avoid the area this evening

Cumberland Council have put an emergency road closure in place in Thirlmere.

It's on West Road between Launchy Gill and Rough Crag after a significant rockfall at Rough Crag earlier today.

The closure is in force to ensure the safety of all road users and pedestrians in the area.

Cumberland Council are currently assessing the situation, to evaluate the extent of the rockfall and potential risks to the surrounding environment. The road will remain closed until further notice, with updates to follow as more information becomes available.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area if at all possible, if you need to visit this area, please follow the diversion route provided along the A591. Further announcements, including expected reopening times will be communicated as soon as possible.

Cumberland Council say they appreciate the public's patience and cooperation as they work to address the situation.
