More than 90 arrested in ongoing crackdown on drink and drug drivers

More than 90 drivers have been arrested on suspicion of driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs so far this month in Cumbria.
Cumbria Constabulary’s Roads Policing Unit is on the county’s roads day and night looking for drivers who are endangering lives by driving whilst impaired.
Since 1st December, the force has so far arrested 96 drivers on suspicion of being over the limit for drink or drugs on our roads.
Of that number, 22 were arrested on suspicion of being over the limit for alcohol and 48 on suspicion of being over the limit for drugs. A further 15 people were arrested on suspicion of failing to prove a specimen for analysis and 11 were arrested on suspicion of being unfit through alcohol or drugs.
Cumbria Police’s Roads Policing Unit Inspector Jack Stabler said:
“Our officers are on the roads constantly, seeking to prevent a tragedy this Christmas by getting to drink and drug drivers before they cause devastation for themselves and other innocent road users.
“There is no excuse for drink and drug driving and the strong penalties for those caught reflect that.
“A drink-drive or drug-drive conviction could easily result in the loss of your license and potentially the loss of your employment.
“This Christmas, lives will be lost on the country’s roads as a result of drink and drug driving. Before you go out this Christmas and New Year, make sure you plan ahead so you are not tempted to get behind the wheel.”
"Truly apalling"
Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, David Allen, said:
“These results - our Police arresting 96 people so far in December for driving under the influence – are nothing short of remarkable and show that the force is tackling the scourge of drink or drug driving seriously.
“It is, however, truly appalling that 96 people thought it was appropriate to get behind the wheel and drive after drinking or taking drugs.
“Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is an incredibly selfish and dangerous act. Not only does it place your own life at risk, you pose a serious risk to other road users.
“In Cumbria, this is not acceptable behaviour – the force will be carrying out more checks of drivers over the festive period and enforcing the law - If you are caught, you will face the consequences.
“Don’t end 2024 by being arrested, or worse, taking someone’s life, because you couldn’t be responsible and stay sober or drug free.
“I would urge everyone to enjoy the festivities but to drive safe, drive legally and do not ever drive drunk or under the influence of drugs.”
