A man from Whitehaven has been jailed for burglary and criminal damage to a property on Brakeside Gardens in Whitehaven.

Daniel Rafferty from Meadow Road was sentenced to two years for the offence which occurred in April this year.

The court heard police received a 999 call to a man breaking into a neighbour’s car, and that he had been in a neighbouring property prior to going to the car.

Officers attended and located a smashed window at the back of the property, inside bleach had been poured over items inside including the sofa and items thrown around the address. Car keys that had been left on the mantle piece had gone missing.

35-year-old Rafferty was identified as a suspect who at the time was on licence and fitted with a tag.

Enquiries were conducted and information received showed Rafferty at the address at the reported time of the offence.

Detective Constable Linzi Wilkinson from Cumberland CID said

“We would like to remind people to remain vigilant to the threat of thefts and burglaries.

“Thanks to the vigilance of neighbour’s officers attended the location and swiftly arrested Rafferty for the offence.

“Burglary offences will not be tolerated and those that engage in these activities will face a police investigation and prosecution."
