Up to 50,000 people are expected to be beginning their journey to Appleby's annual horse fair.

As a result roads in and around Westmorland and Furness are expected to become congested for a sustained period of time, with the council now asking for the public's support in making sure they remain fluid and safe.

The horse fair's own website states: "It is of prime importance that those who are visiting the fair arrive and return home safely.

"Cumbria sees an influx of slow moving horse drawn trailers and caravans in the area as the fair approaches and gypsies and travellers come from all across Europe to enjoy Appleby Horse Fair.

"Appleby Horse Fair, can attract up to 50,000 visitors, which can cause travel issues.

"Horse drawn trailers and caravans will use the main roads into Appleby, including the busy A66 as well as other roads across the north of England. All agencies remind motorists to be extra vigilant at this time of year to prevent any accidents."

To help cope with the influx in the town itself a traffic management plan is in place to help ease issues around parking, one way streets and congestion on main routes in and out of the town.

Steph Cordon from Westmorland Council said: "There are some ideas in there about how we can slow traffic down and get the best possible routes into Appleby and beyond to reduce congestion.

"We've put lots of messages out about don't arrive too early or too soon. That builds up traffic when we see a large number of people travelling through Westmorland and Furness who are coming to the fair.

"Some encampments are already set up. We do ask motorists to be careful of the slow moving traffic on the roads."
