In the wake of local elections, Coventry City Council's leader has warned people local services may not improve until the council receives more support from government.

The council said it has a budget shortfall of £31 million and has not ruled out making further cuts to local services.

Despite winning three seats from the Conservatives in last week's local elections, council leader George Duggin's message was one of caution.

He said: "We've already had to make cuts and some of the decisions we've taken haven't necessarily gone down well with the public.

"We're not expecting a Labour government to address all the issues around local government funding but we will look for them to level up for us."

"Without our staff we couldn't deliver anything. We are now moving towards a new refuse service and we've got every confidence it will deliver for the people of the city."
