Campaigners fail to win their fight against cycleway in Coventry
26 trees on Clifford Bridge Road will be axed as campaigners lose their fight against the high court
Campaigners against a proposed cycleway on Clifford Bridge Road failed to win their fight at High Court.
The decision made in High Court will see 26 trees be axed in order to create the cycleway which has been met with opposition from many residents.
The council made the decision to complete the Binley cycleway in December, the £12m project will connect the city centre to University Hospital Coventry.
Residents have been campaigning against the cycleway plans due to safety and environmental concerns.
Dawn McCann is a local campaigner who was in attendance at High Court yesterday.
Dawn told us she was devastated by the decision to fell the 26 trees on Clifford Bridge Road and that many of her neighbours feel the same.
Dawn said: "The community will be really disappointed by the result today but we are a tight community and we will stick together.
"It's just pointless taking the trees down."
Dawn continued: "The proposed cycleway is dangerous for cyclists, pedestrians and vehicles.
"We hope the council will finalise the designs and correct the safety faults."
GR Solicitors scrutinised Coventry City Council's plans, they released a statement on the High Court result.
GR Solicitors said: " We are very disappointed that the judge has today refused our application for judicial review and an interim injunction.
"Despite our best efforts and obvious questions around the failure of the Council to publish key information, to undertake a proper and up to date assessment of the trees and to consider critical safety issues and the interests of disabled persons, the Court did not find in our favour."
Over 200 cyclists are expected to use the Clifton Bridge Road section of the route per day, once it's been built.
A Coventry council spokesperson said: “Following the conclusion of the legal challenge, we are now able to start work. This means the Binley cycleway will be completed – with a full route between the city centre and the hospital.”
Construction on the final section of the Binley Cycleway is due to begin this year and is expected to be completed in 2026.
